If you bought a microwave in the last few years, or a house that has a newer microwave, you’ll want to check and see if your GE, GE Profile or Kenmore microwave is on the recall list.
Last week, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of 92,000 microwaves that were in stores between 2000-2003. All of the recalled models were part of a combined microwave & conventional oven built-in unit. So, if your microwave is a stand alone model with a completely separate range, you don’t have to worry that your model is defective.
If your microwave is under the recall, you can get a rebate to purchase a new microwave. Check out the full story by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and see if your microwave oven model is on the list.
Speaking of appliances, if you are thinking of selling your home soon and have older appliances, you may want to consider updating them.
Buyers may look past your 10 year old cabinets and counters if they still look good, but will feel the kitchen needs updating if they see 10 year old appliances. Given the low cost of replacing appliances, it is one improvement that could make a big difference in attracting buyers. According to Remodeling Online, Missouri sellers can expect to get a 74% return on the cost of a minor kitchen remodel (averaging $22k for the remodel). My experience is that if a seller has cabinetry that isn’t outdated, for a few thousand dollars they can simply replace the older appliances along with making other other minor updates such as new cabinet hardware. These sellers can expect to get most of that money back when they are ready to sell…and will be less likely to hear that buyers aren’t interested in the house because the kitchen needs updating.
