I was catching up on my reading for all of my news and blog subscriptions, and came across an interesting article in the St. Louis Business Journal.
St. Louis based Enterprise Rent-A-Car now has 9 hybrid cars stationed around downtown St. Louis that are available so visitors, workers and residents can rent a car on an hourly basis.
I see a variety of great uses for these rental cars:
-
Go ahead and use MetroLink for your work commute and know that a car is available if you need to run a quick errand at lunch or have to get home unexpectedly.
-
Join a carpool for your work commute and feel confident that you can rent a car to get home if you get stuck working late (they are also offering the cars overnight from 6 PM to 8 AM for only $30)
-
Live downtown and skip owning a car entirely saving on insurance, personal property taxes and gas. Use public transportation but have access to a rental car instead of taxis when you want to go load up on groceries or need to take a trip that is off the Metro bus route.
-
St. Louis visitors could skip the daily rental car and only rent the car for when it is needed. I did this on my vacation to San Francisco using public transportation everywhere in the city but renting a car for for a day trip to Napa Valley.
-
Suburbanites could take MetroLink downtown for Cardinals, Blues and Rams games, but rent a car to run down to Soulard for a visit to the Farmer’s Market or for some live music after the game before heading home.
What do you think? Do you think St. Louisians are ready to give up the control of having a car at their beck and call?
