One of the most common questions I hear from buyers that are looking for a home in St. Louis City is about safety.
As a Realtor, it’s a challenging question to answer. Each buyer has a different perception of what makes a neighborhood safe. Most real estate agents are taught to simply point their buyers to the local police department.
I often encourage buyers to spend some time in the neighborhood talking to neighbors before they buy a home. The neighborhood pub or coffee shop can be a great source of information. If buyers are unfamiliar with a city neighborhood, I encourage them to visit the area at dinner time. I suggest they take a walk around the neighborhood before it gets dark, talking to anyone outside about what they like about the neighborhood and the neighborhood problems.
But taking a walk and talking to neighbors does not give you a complete picture.
Luckily, the St. Louis City Police department has an online interactive crime map and publishes crime statistics for each neighborhood.
2008 Crime Rates for Popular St. Louis City Neighborhoods:

More crime statistics by type of crime and for additional city neighborhoods. See neighborhood map.
*** Population statistics based on 2000 U.S. Census. Please note that areas with major population growth in the last 9 years, such as the Downtown Loft district, will have inflated per person crime rates due to underestimated population levels.
