Last week I started a new weekly series – St. Louis in Pictures. Stop in each Friday to see some of the pictures I’ve taken in my explorations around town.
Shaw Neighborhood:
Wedged between Hwy 44 and Tower Grove Park is the tight knit Shaw Neighborhood.
Shaw is a friendly community where neighbors get to know each other.
They gather at the Dog Park, Community Garden, over a glass of wine at Sasha’s or enjoy live music at Thurman’s. They walk to Tower Grove Park for the festivals and the weekly summer Farmer’s market, and enjoy the free summer concerts at the Mo. Botanical Gardens which borders the neighborhood to the west.
Look down any street and you’ll find 2 story and 2.5 story homes that are over 100 years old. They have high ceilings, carved staircases, large living and dining rooms and alley access to the garage or parking pad behind the home. The grand homes lining divided Flora Place offer everything you could want in a home, while the neighborhood also offers many affordable homes like the 2.5 story home we just listed on Botanical for only $165,000.

I had a lot of fun driving around snapping pictures of homes that represent the neighborhood. Being a bit on the lazy side, I was shooting these pics from my car so did my best to find homes with a view that wasn’t blocks by cars and trees. Identical homes look totally different after a colorful paint job
St. Margaret of Scotland Church
St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church is really involved with the community, working with other local organizations and residents to improve the neighborhood. St. Margaret runs the community garden and has a popular elementary school in the neighborhood.
Bicycle WORKS
Bicycle WORKS is a non-profit program that teaches at-risk kids about bicycle maintenance & safety, cooperation and how to work toward a goal. The kids who complete the program earn a free bike. The program has been so successful that they have outgrown the building, and will be moving to Soulard this summer. I’m glad I snapped this pic before they left.
Vintage Lester’s Music Store sign
While the current occupant of this building is a graphic design firm, they had the good sense to keep the vintage Lester’s sign on the building. I wonder how many parents wander in looking for guitar lessons.
