Plan your Summer with ACH’s Free Summer Concert List

Four years ago I spent an entire weekend searching the internet in order to put together a comprehensive list of every St. Louis free summer concert series.

The list, like many others published here, was created because I couldn’t find something I wanted. I decided to put together a list for myself and share it.

I had no idea it would gain so much traction.

Last year, the 3rd year I published the list, I started getting calls from band managers hoping to book their bands and people wanting to find out if a particular concert was rained out.

The answer was always the same…“I’m really just a real estate agent who put together a list to be helpful for my website visitors. I don’t have anything to do with planning these concerts.”

This year I started getting emails in March to find out when I would publish the list. MARCH…seriously! It’s still WINTER in March, and no one has their schedules published yet. Sure, I could start the list early and check all of the sites weekly to see who has finally gotten around to posting their schedule. But I make a living selling homes, and spring is really busy for me.

The bottom line is that I need to wait to update the list until the vast majority of concert organizers have posted their information.

Today I finally set aside all my real estate work and got the list finished. Well, partially finished since I decided I want to add Jefferson County this year. I would also love to add something that lets people review a particular concert series, but I haven’t figured out how I’m going to do that yet without creating a page for every since concert series, which I really don’t want to do. I’ll let you know when I figure it out.

I know many of you subscribed to to my email list just to get the free summer concert list, and really have no interest in the other stuff I publish. I understand. I hope you’ll stick around and read about some of the other things going on in St. Louis and the real estate market. I hope you’ll take just a second to look at the new listings we publish and pass them on if you know anyone who might be a potential buyer. But I will understand if you hit unsubscribe now that you’ve got the concert list.

Regardless of whether you explore our website or just bookmark the concert post, we really do value your support (and your patience!). We know you have a lot of options on how to spend your internet time. For those of you who have left comments in the past, our gratitude goes out to you!

The St. Louis theater scene offers many choices for live entertainment all year long, but summertime in St. Louis offers a special treat.

The Muny Theater:

Located in the 1,293 acres of Forest Park, The Muny Theater is the oldest and largest outdoor theater in the United States. Built in 1917 in 49 days, the theater has 11,000 seats and holds 7 one week shows each summer.

I’ve spent many warm summer nights sitting in the green seats of The Muny. When I first got out of college and was on a very tight budget, I would stand in line for one of the 1500 free seats available in the last 9 rows of the theater.

At some point I realized that for just a few dollars, I could get a reserved seat in front of the free seats and avoid getting to the theater 2 hours early.

Over the years, I’ve seen many great shows at The Muny. I’ve braved 90+ degree weather and a couple of downpours. Don’t worry, there is plenty of covered space where you can wait out a rainstorm. If the rain lets up in time, the ushers will scamper through the 11,000 seats, quickly drying them off with towels so the performance can continue.

With shows starting at 8:15 PM, consider bringing a picnic dinner with you and enjoying the beautiful gardens around the theater. You can also bring food and non-alcoholic beverages into the theater.

The Muny Theater 2011 Schedule:

This year, they have a great line up of shows scheduled. The Muny is a family friendly theater, so consider introducing your children to the theater this summer. Every year, the schedule includes at least one family oriented show. With The Little Mermaid on the agenda, I’m guessing that good seats will sell out quickly.

Some people may wonder why I spend time putting together a map of bars that still allow smoking or coffee houses that offer free WiFi. After all, isn’t this a real estate website.

The reason is really very simple.

People hire us to sell their St. Louis homes. In order to do that, we need to get information about their homes in front of as many people as possible.

If we are going to stay in business, we also need to have people hire us to sell their homes or help them buy a new home.

This website is designed to promote all of our homes for sale (see the Featured Listings tab). It also has the best St. Louis home search available, offers information about our team and reviews from our clients.

I realize that the vast majority of people who land on this website to find out where they can go and enjoy a cigarette with their beer have no interest in looking at homes for sale or hiring an agent.

But some of those cigarette smoking bar-goers actually do need a real estate agent or are looking for a house. When they realize they are on a real estate site, some of them will start exploring the site.

It’s a numbers game. We need to get as many eyeballs as possible looking at our listings and our real estate services.

Some of them actually will. A while ago I received a call from a man who had been relying on our Free Summer Concert list to plan his summer outings. He bookmarked the site and came back time and time again. Eventually he explored the site and contacted me when he was ready to buy a home.

I’m thrilled that the smoke-free ban was passed. But my job is to sell homes and get people to hire us. Putting together a list of bars where smokers can still smoke can help make that happen.

If you hired me to sell your home, don’t be mistaken into thinking that I’m playing around and not focusing on marketing your house. Everything I do on this website is about selling homes.

I’m just thinking outside of the box.

Find St. Louis Bars Where Smoking is Allowed

St. Louis City and County enacted a smoking ban on public places on January 2, 2011.

There are some exemptions, so people looking for a place to go out and smoke still have some options.

St. Louis County:

In St. Louis County, the law allows bars with limited food sales to be exempt. St. Louis County has a list of drinking establishments that have received exemptions from the smoking ban (officially the St. Louis County Indoor Clean Air Act).

The law exempts:

“drinking establishments” that sell 25% or less of their revenue for food
casinos
retail tobacco stores (with 60% or more from sale of tobacco)
cigar bars
outdoor dining areas
private clubs (not exempt when open to the public)
private residences not serving as a place of employment
20% of hotel/motel rooms (if designated)

St. Louis City:

I’ve been communicating with Mayor Slay, and he said that the city is working on a list of exempt bars. They are trying to avoid granting exemptions too hastily and having some mistakes as St. Louis County did with bowling alleys.

As of January 8, he tells me that over 100 establishments have applied for the exemption, and most have been inspected and measured (the city includes a maximum square footage requirement on exempt drinking establishments). He says that some of the businesses which applied have not been approved.

The official rules for the city exemption are:

bars that sell 25% or less of their revenue for food AND are 2,000 square feet or less (minus kitchen, storage and restroom areas) *exemption expires in Jan 2015
casino gaming floors
retail tobacco stores (with 50% or more from sale of tobacco)
outdoor dining and employment areas
private clubs (not exempt when open to the public)
private residences not serving as a daycare or health care facility
20% of hotel/motel rooms (if designated)

Since I couldn’t find anything that showed the exempt bars on a map, I went ahead and put one together. This map displays drinking establishments that still ALLOW smoking.

IMPORTANT NOTE: While the city is working their way through the applicants to see who is approved, I have added them to the map since I’m assuming most will be approved. PLEASE call to confirm the smoking policy before heading out if you are going one of the bars located in St. Louis City.

Whether you are using this map to find places you can still go to smoke, or places you want to avoid, I hope you find it helpful.

As soon as the city publishes a list of exempt bars, I’ll update the map to make sure that only smoking-permitted bars are on it.

St. Louis County bars are based on the exemptions granted as of 12/31/10.

Coffee House Review ~ Lone Wolf Coffee Company

I am always in search of new coffee shop and cafes, and if they offer free WiFi, they move to the top of the list.

If you’ve seen my post listing free WiFi options in St. Louis, you’ll see that I have 5 criterion to qualify a WiFi spot as a favorite:

Free Wi-Fi (free)
Good coffee with free unlimited refills (coffee)
Good access to outlets (plugs)
Real food…not just muffins & dessert (food)
Easy parking (cars)

What I didn’t mention in the WiFi post was that atmosphere matters to me too. If a coffee house has an independent, cozy or small town feel, I’ll give them a break if they don’t meet all my other criteria.

The free WiFi list started out with just places that I had frequented. Then my readers started telling me about places I didn’t know about, and the goal became to create as comprehensive list as possible.

One of my readers mentioned Lone Wolf Coffee Company, a coffee shop/cafe in Ballwin that was not on my radar. Last week, I drove by their location when I was showing clients homes in Ballwin & Chesterfield and made a mental note that I needed to come back to check it out.

So, when a few of my twitter friends and I decided to get together for Sunday brunch and they asked me to pick a location, I jumped on the chance to try it out.

Lone Wolf Coffee Company:

Lone Wolf Coffee Company gives me everything I want in a coffee shop. Plus they even have a bunch of patio tables that are big enough to accommodate 5 or 6 people…I love eating outside so this gets them bonus points in my book!

If I lived nearby, I would definitely be a regular.

The decor was outdoorsy (paddle, bike, hike stuff) and the menu looked great. I ordered their Trailhead Temptation (bacon, egg & cheese sandwich) and was not disappointed. Free coffee refills would have made it easy for me to spend the day there.

I also liked the mix of people. There were a few families with small kids, an assortment of singles and twosomes, and quite a few people that stopped in before or after a ride in their cycling outfits.

I didn’t get around to taking interior pictures, but they had a small cozy area with a leather couch, a main dining area and another room that looked like is it used for live music with plenty of tables that could seat large groups.

And I spotted a few outlets and even a surge protector too. From what I can tell, they are doing everything they can to make nomadic laptop users welcome.

And now that I know that they serve Schlafly beer and wine and have live music, I think I’ll have to go back for an evening outing.

Shakespeare Festival St. Louis

Since 2001, St. Louis residents have had a chance to see a Shakespeare play live in Forest Park for free.

If you have never been to the Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, here is the rundown.

The play starts at 8:00 pm, but seating fills up early. Most people arrive between 5:30-7 pm to stake out a place for their blankets and chairs and to enjoy a picnic dinner before the show. If you can get there by 6, you’ll get a pretty good seat. If you want to sit up close or in the blankets-only area, I would suggest arriving around 5:30.

I strongly recommend bringing lawn chairs since sitting on the ground behind a few hundred lawn chairs will make it pretty impossible to see. Your only option would be to sit back really far so you are high on the hill (the stage is set at the bottom of a hill), pay for a rental lawn chair or arrive early to sit up front in the blankets-only area.

You can also go onto twitter and contact @shakesfestSTL for a reserved tweet seat.

Prior to the performance is a Green Show where the actors perform a cliff notes version of the play so you understand what will be happening. It is a HUGE help when watching Shakespeare to either watch the Green Show or to read a summary of the play in advance. Plan on getting lost in the language at times, but you’ll catch enough of it to follow along.

They also have performers wandering the crowd to entertain everyone. Last year they had belly dancers to go along with the ‘Merry Wives of Windsor’ theme. This year the guy in the video joked around with the crowd for about a 90 minutes.

Food and beverages are available for sale, but you can also bring in anything you want, including coolers and alcohol.

This year’s show is Hamlet with performances every night until June 20 except for Tuesdays and June 5.

And don’t forget the bug spray. You’ll be glad you brought it along.
